Bitcoin Payments in Mexico: How to Pay at Any Business ?

The short answer: With Bull Bitcoin, you can send Mexican pesos to any bank account in the country directly from your Bitcoin wallet. The business receives a standard SPEI transfer. They don't need to know what Bitcoin is,they don't need a wallet, they don't need anything. The transaction takes under 60 seconds. Here's what you need and how to do it.

The question most Bitcoiners are asking wrong

Mexico's Bitcoin ecosystem is real and growing. Hundreds of merchants across the country already accept Lightning payments directly, and that number keeps rising. But if you limit yourself to that list, you're leaving out the vast majority of the economy.

The more useful question isn't "which businesses accept Bitcoin?" It's "which businesses have a Mexican bank account?" Because with the right infrastructure, any business with a CLABE can receive your satoshis as pesos, via a standard SPEI transfer, without knowing anything about Bitcoin or wallets. That's what Bull Bitcoin made possible in Mexico: any Bitcoiner living or visiting the country can now operate on a Bitcoin standard, whether the merchant knows what Bitcoin is or not. You just need their CLABE.

What Bull Bitcoin is and what it isn't

Bull Bitcoin is a self-custodial, Bitcoin-only brokerage founded in Canada in 2013, making it the world's longest-running Bitcoin-only exchange. It expanded to Mexico in 2025. Unlike exchanges like Bitso or Binance, it is built on two non-negotiable principles: Bitcoin only (no altcoins, no stablecoins, no tokens), and self-custody by default (Bull Bitcoin never holds your bitcoin, private keys are generated on your device and never leave it).

With a custodial exchange like Bitso, if the platform goes bankrupt, freezes withdrawals, or gets hacked, you lose your funds. With Bull Bitcoin, that risk doesn't exist: at no point in the transaction does Bull Bitcoin have access to your bitcoin.

The practical difference also shows in speed and simplicity. With Bitso, paying a third party involves multiple steps: sell BTC, wait for the conversion, then initiate a separate SPEI withdrawal. With Bull Bitcoin it's a single action: you send bitcoin from your own wallet, Bull Bitcoin converts it at the published exchange rate and deposits it directly via SPEI to the CLABE you specify.

The technology: Bitcoin to pesos in seconds

Four components make this work.

SPEI (Sistema de Pagos Electrónicos Interbancarios) is Mexico's interbank instant transfer network, operated by the Banco de México. It moves money between every bank in the country in real time, processing over 14 million transactions daily, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with most transfers settling in under two seconds. For the recipient, receiving money via SPEI is identical to receiving any other bank transfer.

CLABE (Clave Bancaria Estandarizada) is the 18-digit number that uniquely identifies any bank account in Mexico. Every business with a bank account has one, and every banked individual has one. It is Mexico's equivalent of an IBAN.

Lightning Network is a payment layer built on top of Bitcoin that enables instant transactions with fees measured in fractions of a cent. Instead of waiting for on-chain confirmations, Lightning payments settle in seconds.

Liquid Network is a Bitcoin sidechain designed for fast, confidential transfers. Bull Wallet supports all three Bitcoin layers and allows non-custodial swaps between them automatically.

Bitcoin on-chain is the base layer of the Bitcoin network. Transactions are settled once confirmed by miners, making it the most secure and censorship-resistant way to move bitcoin. For everyday real-life payments through Bull Bitcoin, Lightning Network or Liquid are the recommended options since transactions are near-instant and cost fractions of a cent. On-chain is better suited for larger amounts where confirmation time is acceptable.

The full flow when you pay with Bull Bitcoin:

From the recipient's perspective, the transaction looks like any standard bank transfer, with no reference to Bitcoin, wallets, or cryptography.

Step by step: paying any business in Mexico

Step 1: Download Bull Wallet (optional but recommended)
Bull Wallet is Bull Bitcoin's self-custodial, open-source Bitcoin wallet, available for free on iOS and Android. Your private keys are generated on your device and never leave it. It supports Bitcoin on-chain, Lightning Network, and Liquid Network. You can also use any compatible wallet you already trust.

Step 2: Create your Bull Bitcoin account and complete verification
Go to https://app.bullbitcoin.com and register. Account verification takes under three minutes for most users.

Step 3: Buy bitcoin
You can buy bitcoin directly on Bull Bitcoin's web platform or from within Bull Wallet by sending a SPEI transfer from your bank account. Once the transfer is detected, bitcoin is delivered automatically to your self-custodial wallet, with no intermediaries holding your funds at any point.

Step 4: Open the "Pay Anyone" feature
The "Pay Anyone" feature is available on Bull Bitcoin's web app and, if you have linked your Bull Bitcoin account to Bull Wallet, directly from the wallet as well.

Step 5: Select "Bank transfer (SPEI)"
Choose this option to send to any Mexican bank account.

Step 6: Enter the CLABE and amount
Enter the recipient's 18-digit CLABE and specify the amount in pesos. Bull Bitcoin automatically calculates how many satoshis you need at the real-time exchange rate. What you see is what you pay.

Step 7: Confirm and send
Review the amount and the recipient's bank name, confirm, and the SPEI transfer is sent. The recipient receives pesos in their bank account in seconds.

What you can actually pay for

The right question isn't "who accepts Bitcoin?" It's "who has a Mexican bank account?" Because the answer to that second question covers virtually every business, professional, and individual in the country.

You can pay with Bitcoin to your landlord by sending rent directly to their CLABE, to restaurants and cafés that accept bank transfers, to salons, barbershops, freelancers, designers, developers, accountants, doctors, lawyers, plumbers, electricians, and anyone else with a bank account, including family or friends who need pesos in their account. None of them need to know what Bitcoin is or have any kind of wallet.

For merchants that already accept Bitcoin directly via Lightning or on-chain: a growing number of independent businesses across the country are listed on btcmap.org. That ecosystem is expanding, and Bull Bitcoin's "Pay Anyone" feature sits alongside it, extending your reach to the rest of the economy.

Sending bitcoin to Mexico

Mexico receives over $65 billion in remittances annually, making it one of the largest recipient countries in the world. The vast majority of that flow passes through services like Western Union or MoneyGram, which charge between 4% and 8% per transfer, take days to settle, and depend on a chain of banking intermediaries that each take a cut along the way.

With Bull Bitcoin, anyone holding bitcoin anywhere in the world can send pesos to any Mexican bank account in under 60 seconds, at a fraction of the cost, with no intermediary holding funds at any point in the process. The recipient doesn't need a Bull Bitcoin account, a Bitcoin wallet, or any knowledge of Bitcoin, as they simply receive a standard SPEI transfer in pesos, identical to any other bank transfer.

Security: your keys, your bitcoin

The fundamental difference between Bull Bitcoin and a custodial exchange is custody.

With a custodial exchange, when you buy bitcoin, the platform holds it for you. If it goes bankrupt, gets hacked, freezes withdrawals, or simply decides not to return your money, you have a problem. This isn't theoretical: it is a recurring pattern in the history of exchanges.

With Bull Bitcoin, your bitcoin is in your wallet from the first moment. Bull Bitcoin never holds it. It executes the conversion, pesos to sats or sats to pesos, and transfers directly to and from your wallet. Once the transaction is complete, Bull Bitcoin has nothing of yours. Bull Wallet generates your private keys on your device, they are never transmitted, transactions are signed locally, and the code is open source.

Basic security practices:

  • Back up your wallet using RecoverBull (recoverbull.com), Bull Bitcoin's free open-source encrypted backup protocol that stores your wallet backup in your own cloud storage with the encryption key held separately, so no single point of failure can compromise your funds
  • As an additional layer, store your 12-word seed phrase on paper, offline, in a safe place
  • Never share your seed phrase with anyone, not even Bull Bitcoin
  • Always verify the CLABE before confirming a payment, as SPEI errors are generally irreversible
  • Enable PIN and biometrics on your wallet

Bull Bitcoin arrives to Colombia

Inflation, peso volatility, capital controls, and expensive intermediaries have made it increasingly difficult for Colombians to protect their savings and move value freely. Most existing solutions offer convenience at the cost of sovereignty. Bull Bitcoin offers something different: a definitive exit from the fiat system.
